The Influence of Narcissism and Self-esteem on Internalizing Problems in Late Childhood:the Mediating Effect of Emotion Regulation Strategies
Objective:To explore the effects and differences of narcissism and self-esteem on children's internalization problems,and the mediating role of emotion regulation strategies(including cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppres-sion).Methods:A sample of 921 fourth-grade and fifth-grade pupils(494 males)were investigated by the Childhood Nar-cissism Scale,Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale,Emotion Regulation Questionnaire,and Internalizing Symptoms Scale for Chil-dren.Results:(1)Narcissism had no significant effect on the direct prediction of internalization problems,but it had an in-direct effect on internalizing problems through cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression.(2)Self-esteem not only di-rectly and negatively predicted internalizing problems,it also predicted internalizing problems through cognitive reapprais-al and expressive suppression.Conclusion:Narcissism and self-esteem have different effects on internalizing problems.Cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression have mediating effects in the relationship.
