The Relationship Between High-Risk Psychotic Experiences and Digital Addiction in Children and Adolescents:The Mediating Role of Sleep Disturbances
Objective:To investigate the rate of high-risk psychotic-like experiences among adolescent cohort,explore their association with digital addiction and the mediation role of sleep disturbances.Methods:Epidemiological surveys were conducted in a city in Sichuan Province,China,among primary and secondary school students in 2021 and 2022,re-spectively.In the 2022 sample,individuals with high-risk psychotic-like experiences were screened,and measurements were taken for the levels of internet gaming addiction,smartphone addiction,social media addiction,sleep quality,and men-tal health issues.Validation was performed in the 2021 sample.Results:(1)Approximately one in ten adolescents had high-risk psychotic-like experiences;(2)All three forms of digital addiction showed independent associations with high-risk psychotic-like experiences,correlating moderately with their severity and subtypes,with a higher correlation observed with delusional symptoms;(3)Sleep disturbances mediated the relationship between childhood and adolescent digital addic-tion and high-risk psychotic experiences.Conclusion:Digital addiction may be an emerging risk factor for high-risk psy-chotic-like experiences.
