Effects of Adverse Childhood Experience on Problematic Internet Use among Secondary School Students:A Chain Mediating Effect of Social Anxiety Symptoms and Expressive Suppression
Objective:Based on the Compensatory Internet Use Theory and Social-Emotional Model of Internet Addic-tion,the effects of adverse childhood experience on problematic Internet use and the chain mediating role of social anxiety symptoms and expressive suppression among secondary school students were examined.Methods:3373 secondary board-ing school students in Guizhou Province were measured by using The Adverse Childhood Experiences International Ques-tionnaire,Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents,Emotion Regulation Questionnaire,and Problematic Internet Use Question-naire Short Form.Results:Adverse childhood experience was positively associated with problematic Internet use,social anxiety symptoms and expressive suppression.Social anxiety symptoms and expressive suppression showed significant sepa-rate and chain mediating effect between adverse childhood experience and problematic Internet use.Conclusion:This study explored the underlying mechanisms of adverse childhood experiences and problematic Internet use,providing a theo-retical basis for understanding and preventing problematic Internet use among boarding secondary school students in re-source-poor areas.Future research could propose practical and effective preventive interventions for problematic internet use from the perspective of reducing social anxiety symptoms and enhancing emotion regulation.
