Reliability and Validity of the Mathematical Resilience Scale among Upper Elementary Students
Objective:To introduce the Chinese version of the Mathematical Resilience Scale(MRS)and to examine its reliability and validity among 5th-and 6th-grade primary school students. Methods:The comprehensibility of the items was tested before the research began.Then,619 individuals were surveyed for item analysis and exploratory factor analysis to establish the formal MRS.Simultaneously, they completed the Growth Mindset Scale(GMS)and the Brief Resilience Scale(BRS)to test the convergent and divergent validity, and the Life Orientation Test(LOT)for criterion-related validity.Subsequently,446 individuals were surveyed for confirmatory factor analysis.Meanwhile, they completed the Value Sub-scale(VS)of the Abbreviated Math Attitude Scale to test convergent and divergent validity, and the Abbreviated Math Anxi-ety Scale(AMAS)for criterion-related validity.Finally,41 students for 4-week test-retest reliability. Results:A new three-factor model with 21 items was yielded by exploratory factor analysis and replicated by confirmatory factor analysis:x2/df=1.56,CFI=0.96,TLI=0.95,SRMR=0.05,RMSEA=0.04.The correlations of the MRS with the VS,GMS,BRS,and LOT ranged from 0.35 to 0.69,and with the AMAS ranged from-0.30 to-0.34(Ps<0.001).The α coefficients was 0.85 in sample 2 as same as in sample 3,the test-retest reliabilities of MRS was 0.68(ICC).Conclusion:Mathematical Resilience Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing mathematical resilience among upper elementary students in China.
