Network Analysis of the Relationship between Sleep Problems and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents
Objective:Investigation of the relationship between sleep problems and depressive symptoms in adolescents and the gender differences.Methods:From three junior high schools in Hunan province,a sum of 1801 students were cho-sen.The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Children's Depression Inventory were used to assess sleep problems and de-pressive symptoms.The association between sleep problems and depressive symptoms was assessed using network analysis methods based on graph theory.Results:(1)The connection between sleep and depression was mainly realized by node daytime dysfunction/subjective sleep quality and anhedonia.In the male group,daytime dysfunction was most closely associ-ated with anhedonia;Subjective sleep quality was most closely associated with anhedonia in the female group.(2)Daytime dysfunction was the most intense sleep problem,and anhedonia was the most intense depressive symptom.In the male group,daytime dysfunction was the most intense sleep problem,and anhedonia was the most intense depressive symptom;In the female group,sleep disturbances was the most intense sleep problems and anhedonia was the most intense depressive symptom.Conclusion:Daytime dysfunction and anhedonia are key features of the association between sleep problems and depressive symptoms in adolescents and may be important intervention targets for alleviating sleep problems and depressive symptoms in adolescents.
