Loneliness and Suicide:The Compensatory and Moderating Effects of Nature Connectedness
Objective:To explore the compensatory and moderating effects of nature connectedness on the relationship between loneliness and suicidal ideation,pre-suicidal attempt and suicidal attempt.Methods:2625 college students were tested by short-form of the University of California at Los Angels loneliness scale,suicide behavior screening questionnaire and connectedness to nature scale.Results:(1)Loneliness predicted suicidal ideation,pre-suicidal attempt and suicidal at-tempt positively;(2)After controlling for loneliness,nature connectedness negatively predicted the suicidal ideation in col-lege students,which had risk compensation effect;(3)Nature connectedness had a protective moderating effect on loneli-ness and suicidal ideation,pre-suicidal attempt and suicidal attempt.High level of nature connectedness could reduce the negative effect of loneliness on suicide.Conclusion:Nature connectedness has the compensatory and moderating effect on the relationship between loneliness and suicidal ideation,and has moderating effect on the relationship between loneliness and pre-suicidal attempt and suicidal attempt.
