Relationship between Negative Grandparent-Mother Co-parenting and Children's Externalizing Problem Behavior:Mediating Role of Maternal Burnout and Moderating Role of Maternal Psychological Flexibility
Objective:To explore the relations between negative grandparent-mother co-parenting and children's exter-nalizing problem behavior,as well as the roles of maternal burnout and maternal psychological flexibility may play in the mechanism of their relationship.Methods:A total of 601 mothers of elementary school students were measured using the grandparents-parents co-parenting relationships scale,Chinese short version of parental burnout assessment,parental psy-chological flexibility questionnaire,and strengths and difficulties questionnaire.Results:①Negative grandparent-mother co-parenting significantly positively correlated with children's externalizing problem behavior;②Maternal burnout com-pletely mediated the relationship between negative grandparent-mother co-parenting and children's externalizing problem behavior;③Maternal psychological flexibility moderated the first half of the mediation path between negative grandparent-mother co-parenting and children's externalizing problem behavior,indicating that when maternal psychological flexibility was low,negative grandparent-mother co-parenting significantly positively influenced maternal burnout,however,as mater-nal psychological flexibility increased,this influence became non-significant,and when maternal psychological flexibility reached some certain high level,the negative grandparent-mother co-parenting showed significant negative influence on maternal burnout.Conclusion:Maternal burnout and maternal psychological flexibility exert a moderated mediating effect on the relationship between negative grandparent-mother co-parenting and children's externalizing problem behavior.
