The Relationship Between the Main Caregiver's Chronic Ego Depletion and Behavior Problems in Preschool Children:The Mediating Role of Harsh Parenting and the Moderating Role of Gratitude
Objective:To explore the impact of chronic ego depletion of the main caregivers on behavior problems in preschool children, and to examine the mediating role of harsh parenting and the moderating role of gratitude.Methods:Us-ing the self-regulatory fatigue scale, harsh parenting scale, gratitude survey, and the strengths and difficulties questionnaire for children aged 3~6,an anonymous survey was conducted among the main caregivers of 533 children from six kindergar-tens in southern China.Results:(1)Ego depletion was significantly positively correlated with children's behavior prob-lems.(2)Harsh parenting partially mediated the impact of ego depletion on children's behavior problems.(3)Gratitude was significantly negatively correlated with ego depletion, harsh parenting, and children's behavior problems.Caregivers with low levels of gratitude exhibited higher levels of ego depletion and harsh parenting, and their children displayed more behav-ior problems.Gratitude moderated the relationship between ego depletion and harsh parenting, with the effect of caregivers'ego depletion on children's behavior problems through harsh parenting being relatively stronger under higher levels of grati-tude.Conclusion:The chronic ego depletion of the main caregivers exacerbates their harsh parenting, which in turn in-creases children's behavior problems.Gratitude plays a moderating role in the relationship between ego depletion and harsh parenting.
