Relationship between Emotional Suppression/Expression and Academic Emotions in Adolescents:Differences between Outperformance and Underperformance Situations
Objective:To examine the differences in the relationship between adolescents'emotional suppression and expression strategies and academic emotions in outperformance and underperformance situations.Methods:Using the ex-perimental method,61 adolescents from 7th to 11th grade completed the modified reactivity and regulation-image task in the outperformance situation(performing better than other students in the creative task)and the underperformance situation(performing worse than other students in the creative task).Results:①In the outperformance situation,emotional suppres-sion could reduce the intensity of positive academic emotions,while no significant difference appeared in the intensity of positive academic emotions between emotional expression and watching conditions;②In the underperformance situation,no significant difference appeared in the intensity of negative academic emotions between emotional suppression and watching conditions,while emotional expression could reduce the intensity of negative academic emotions.Conclusion:Adolescents have identified how to use emotional suppression and expression strategies flexibly to obtain better emotional experience in both outperformance and underperformance situations.
