Current status of pharmacist-managed clinics and patient cognition and needs in pharmacist-managed clinics in Shenzhen
AIM To investigate the status quo, experience and lessons, difficulties and obstacles of pharmacist-managed clinics at various levels of medical institutions in Shenzhen, and investigate the demand for pharmacist-managed clinics and knowledge of pharmacist-managed clinics,so as to provide a scientific basis for promoting the development of pharmacist-managed clinics in medical institutions and formulating relevant policies in Shenzhen.METHODS A large sample questionnaire was used to understand the development situation of pharmacist-managed clinics at various levels of medical institutions in Shenzhen, the cognition and demand of patients for pharmacist-managed clinics. The descriptive statistical analysis and analysis of influencing factors were carried out on the results.Addionally, the experience and lessons in the development of pharmacist-managed clinics were summarized according to key informant interviews.RESULTS Results of key informant interview showed that medical institutions need support from national policies and hospital leaders,high-quality pharmaceutical professionals, information systems, service norms and independent workspace. The main bottlenecks included charge, pharmacist qualification, duty division of physicians and pharmacists, lack of attention from the leadership, low trust of patients, and insufficient publicity.Pharmacists should be patient-centered and participate in formulating and monitoring drug use plans. However, due to the limitation of prescribing rights and working procedures, the actual work content was mostly drug evaluation and education. Results of medical institutions survey showed that the proportion of pharmacist-managed clinics was 19.44%.Results of patient survey showed that only 26.55%of patients familiar with pharmacist-managed clinics, and 81.78%of patients were willing to pay for the pharmacist-managed clinics.CONCLUSION With a shorter history of pharmacist-managed clinic services and low frequency of opening, there are problems such as lack of guidance and norms, insufficient incentive mechanism and shortage of technical personnel. There is a great demand for pharmaceutical care among patients.Still, patients are unfamiliar with the role of pharmacists and the scope of pharmacist-managed clinic service,so the role of pharmacists and pharmacist-managed clinics has not been fully developed.
