The Relationship between the Book of Shuidao tigang and the Map of Huangyu quanlan tu during the Kangxi Reign
The map of Huangyu quanlan tu published in the Kangxi Reign(Overview Maps of Imperial Territories in the Kangxi Reign,康熙《皇舆全览图》)is the first atlas recorded the territory of early Qing Dynasty, compiled with modern surveying and mapping techniques. And this atlas is the most complete and accurate map recorded in the nationwide water systems during the early Qing Dynasty. The book of Shuidao tigang(An Outline of Waterway,《水道提纲》)is the first monograph in China's history systematically re-corded the sources, routes and geography of the nationwide rivers. This paper argues that the Chinese ver-sion of Huangyu quanlan tu in the Kangxi Reign is the main reference for the compile of the book of Shuidao tigang. And the book of Shuidao tigang also refers to relevant literature and adds information that is not available or cannot be shown on the map, which helps to improve our understanding on various names of a river, the judgement of the source of the rivers, the relationship between the rivers and political districts. As a result, the book of Shuidao tigang is not only a pictorial description of Huangyu quanlan tu in Kangxi Reign, but also the inheritance and development of it.
