The stone inscriptions of Dazhao and Chengru, two eminent monks of the northern Chan Buddhist school during the Tang dynasty, have survived in different forms. It is necessary to clarify the relationship between those sources.Through a comparison of the texts and calligraphy on the stone fragment unearthed from the crypt at Songyue Monastery,Dengfeng,Henan province with the copy of Dazhao Stele[大照碑],it is found that the former is part of the Dazhao Stele, with omissions made in the latter. This paper also examines previous results of comparing existing stone fragments of the Chengru Stele[乘如碑]with stone documentations, together with rubbings,to obtain more accurate information on the inscriptions. The rubbing of Chengru's epitaph and the Chengru Stele,as mutual evidence and supplements, are important historical sources for studying the life of Chengru.
