Tomb M1 at Tieguai village,Nanling county,was built by Xu Ji,a Hanlin academician,for his mother Lady Guan during the Jianzhong to Chongning period in the late Northern Song dynasty.Some special burial objects were placed between the inner and outer coffins of this tomb,among which wooden figurines and tin wares were Mingqi[明器],wooden architectural models and wooden household furniture were Yuanzhai[园宅]and Xiazhang[下帐],respectively.In funerary practice,Xu Ji started from his personal conception,referred to the burial traditions in local funeral customs,put together the texts from the official funeral regulations and private rituals formed in different periods of the Tang and Song dynasties,and transformed these contents into physical forms.This tomb is an important example of the construction of funeral rituals carried out by the scholar-officials of the Song dynasty.
