The Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has a substantial collection of correspondences to Li Hongzao,a prominent minister during the late Qing dynasty.Among these records, more than ten letters were from Yao Xueyuan,Li's cousin and a significant salt merchant in Tianjin before and after the Sino-Japanese War.Within these correspondences,Yao provided detailed accounts and analyses of the political and war situation at the time.He consistently articulated his views advocating peace after the fall of Port Arthur(Lv Shun)while also shedding light on various public and political conditions in Tianjin, including escalating war-related apprehensions and inefficiencies in managing local militias. These correspondences offer a distinctive vantage point on the Sino-Japanese War and underscore Yao's extensive connections with officials in Tianjin as a"gentry merchant.".
