The Dongsifangtai mountain city site is situated in Wangqing county,Jilin province,on a mountain crest between Qianhe and Houhe, two tributaries of the Gaya River. It used be dated to the Jin dynasty. In a systematic archaeological survey of the site conducted in 2021 by the Jilin Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, details about the city walls and associated buildings were recorded.A large number of remains were found, including house foundations, courtyards, and smelting sites, which were mainly distributed in five areas.Artefacts, mostly made of iron, were collected from this site.Based on a comparative study, the remains are divided into two stages. Those of the first stage, distributed within a small area and dated to the Bohai kingdom period, are primarily house foundations arranged in long rows, courtyards, and smelting sites.Remains of the second stage include square house foundations, large courtyards, and large smelting sites, which should be dated to the Jin dynasty.Comprehensive analysis shows that the Dongsifangtai mountain city site was probably a special city site mainly for iron production.
