According to his tomb epitaph,Xie En was the elder brother of Xie Zhao, husband of Princess Yongchun, and died in the forty-second year of the Jiajing era(1563).In 1987,forty-five sancai-glazed pottery wares were unearthed from Xie's tomb in Bo'an county,Henan province, including human and animal figurines and models of household utensils, furniture, and offerings. Now in the Bo'ai County Museum, they are regarded as fine pieces of Ming dynasty sancai ware.Ceramics production in present-day Jiaozuo region(where the Bo'ai county is located)reached a peak during the Song to Yuan period, with the Dangyangyu kilns being most representative. The Ming dynasty saw a decline of ceramics production in this region and the prime time of glazed wares and sancai wares in the neighbouring Shanxi region. Therefore, although Ming sancai wares have been rarely found in Jiaozuo, considering the geographical and cultural connections, those from Xie's tomb were probably made in and brought from Shanxi.
