Effects of Yeast on Eclosion,Developmental Duration,Adult Body Weight,Sex Ratio and Attractive Behavior of Cryptolestes ferrugineus(Stephens)
Previous experiments have shown that the Cryptolestes ferrugineus prefers foods with yeast, and the ad-dition of yeast was found to increase the population of C.ferrugineus.In order to know the effects of yeast on the growth, reproduction and behavioral manipulation of C.ferrugineus, the biological parameters, such as developmental duration, number and weight of newly emerged adults, sex ratio and growth rate of adult C.ferrugineus weight, etc.were measured by adding different concentrations of active and inactivated yeast to foods of C.ferrugineus.The at-traction of active yeast, inactivated yeast, yeast extracts and their volatiles to C.ferrugineus were tested by four-armed olfactometer, and their volatiles identified by GC-MS.The results indicated that the number of adults of C.ferrugineus in the active yeast and inactivated yeast food groups was significantly higher than that in the control group.Active yeast and inactivated yeast can shorten the developmental duration of C.ferrugineus.Moreover,inactivated yeast could significantly increase the proportion of emerged female adults and the growth rate of newly emerged female adults.C.ferrugineus adults showed a strong preference for inactivated yeast, which may be related to the unique 11 components, such as butylated hydroxytoluene in the volatiles of inactivated yeast. In summary, the yeast eaten by C.ferrugineus may mainly provide nutrients for C.ferrugineus, and the inactivated yeast was more suitable as a nutri-ent needed by C.ferrugineus for its growth and development;inactivated yeast and its volatiles had a high attraction to C.ferrugineus.
