Test Authenticity and Validity in Language Testing:Case Study of Aviation English Test
Test authenticity has been a focus of debates for decades and test validity has been an eternal theme in both educational and language testing. The relationship between the two test qualities has also been widely addressed in the two fields.Nevertheless,in the literature, few empirical studies have been conducted to investigate test authenticity and the relationship between the two important test qualities. The present study aims to fill in the gap with a case study of a national aviation English test in China.Questionnaires and interviews are the main tools applied in the study to collect the data of per-ceived test authenticity and perceived test validity. In addition,a theoretical framework is proposed to evaluate test authenticity of the test.Statistical analysis of the empirical data shows that there is a strong positive correlation between perceived authenticity and perceived validity. This study offers an example of validating tests of language for specific purpose(LSP)with test authenticity.
