A clear concept of subject is of critical importance for grammar study.This paper re-views the dichotomy-style ideas about subject in the past,advocates a prototypical subject stance and establishes the continuum between subject and non-subject based on the cross-linguistic universal stud-ies of linguistic typology.This paper analyzes the subject-related matters in English and Chinese and provides insights on how to identify atypical subjects.
