Study on cognitive function of ginkgo biloba extract combined with continuous positive airway pressure ventilation in elderly patients with severe OSAHS
Objective To investigate the effects of ginkgo biloba extract on cognitive function and related cyto-kines in elderly patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS).Methods One hundred and twenty elderly patients with severe OSAHS diagnosed in Department of Respiration of North China University of Science and Technology Affiliated Hospital from February 2017 to October 2019 were se-lected.Randomized table method was used to randomly divide 40 patients into non-invasive ventilator group(group A),non-invasive ventilator combined with ginkgo biloba extract group(group B),and ginkgo biloba extract group(group C).Patients in group A were treated with continuous positive airway pressure(CPAP)ventilation.Patients in group C were treated with oral ginkgo biloba extract.Patients in group B were treated with CPAP combined with ginkgo biloba. After 6 months,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)was used to detect the changes of fasting serum insulin-like growth factor 1(IGF-1)and brain-derived nerve growth factor(BDNF)in the three groups before and after treatment. The Montreal cognitive assessment scale(MoCA)was applied to evaluate the changes of cognitive function in the three groups before and after treatment. The correlation between serum levels of IGF-1 and BDNF and cognitive function in group B was analyzed. Results There was no significant difference in serum IGF-1,BDNF and MoCA scores between three groups before treatment(P>0.05).The levels of serum IGF-1,BDNF and scores of MoCA indexes in three groups after treatment were significantly higher than those before treatment. Moreover, the levels of sierum IGF-1,BDNF and scores of MoCA indexes in group B were significantly higher than those in groups A and C(P<0.05).After treatment, the levels of serum IGF-1 and BDNF and the scores of MoCA indexes in group B were significantly higher than those in group A(P<0.05).Serum IGF-1 and BDNF levels in group B were positively correlated with the total MoCA score(r=0.674,P=0.003;r=0.787,P=0.004).Con-clusion Ginkgo biloba extract combined with CPAP can improve cognitive function in elderly patients with severe OSAHS to a certain extent, which may be related to the increased expression levels of serum IGF-1 and BDNF.
