Objective This study aims to explore the relationship between the frequency of tea consumption and longitudinal changes in the triacylglycerol-glucose index(TyG index)in rural areas, based on a cohort study. Methods A baseline survey was conducted among participants of a free health checkup program at the Third People's Hospital of Xiangcheng District,Suzhou, between May 2014 to December 2014.Questionnaire surveys and annual physical examinations were administered to collect data on tea consumption, cognitive function, depression status, and blood pressure.Follow-up assessments were carried out biennially from 2015 to 2020.The TyG index was calculated using fasting blood glucose and triglyceride measurements.Tea consumption frequency was obtained via a self-designed questionnaire, and participants were categorized ac-cordingly.Generalized estimating equations(GEE)were employed to analyze the relationship between tea consumption frequency and longitudinal changes in the TyG index. Results The study included 4 391 people.A total of 1 baseline study and 3 follow-up visits were initiated during the 6-year period. The number of fol-low-up visits for each participant included in the study was≥2 times, with an average follow-up of 5.3 years.Compared with non-tea drinkers, tea drinkers had lower TyG index. After grouping according to the quartiles of the TyG index,it was found that the distribution proportion of the TyG index of non-tea drinkers in Q2、Q3 and Q4 gradually increased, while the distribution proportion of the TyG index of other tea drinking groups in Q2、Q3 and Q4 gradually decreased(x2=42.085,P<0.001).Generalized estimating equation a-nalysis showed that compared with non-tea drinkers, the TyG index of tea drinkers(even if the frequency of tea drinking was≤1 day per week or month)decreased during the follow-up period(P<0.001).After adjus-ting the model confounding factors, the results did not change significantly, and the results showed that the TyG index decreased best when the frequency of tea drinking was 4 to 5 days per week. Conclusion Tea con-sumption frequency is associated with a reduction in the TyG index, particularly when tea is consumed 4 to 5 days per week.
