The disease burden attributable to low intake of whole grains among residents(≥ 15 years old)in Jiangsu Province from 1990 to 2019
Objective To understand the disease burden and trend attributable to low whole grains intake among residents in Jiangsu Province from 1990 to 2019,and provide the scientific basis for reasonable dietary prevention strategy for disease. Methods The data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019(GBD 2019)were used to analyze the disease burden attributable to low intake of whole grains among Jiangsu residents(≥15 years old)in 1990 and 2019 by death number, mortality, disability adjusted life years(DALY),years of life lost(YLL)and years lived with disability(YLD),and standardized according to world standard population.Data collection and analysis were performed by Excel 2021,and Joinpoint 4.9.1.0 was used to calculate the average annual percentage change(AAPC)for every indicator. Results The number of deaths due to low intake of whole grains in Jiangsu increased from 6 024 cases to 15 280 cases, and the age-standardized mortaity decreased from 13.82/105 to 12.35/105(AAPC=-0.43%,P<0.05)from 1990 to 2019.The age-standardized rates(ASRs)of DALY,YLD and YLL in 2019 were 252.90/105,44.13/105 and 208.76/105,respectively.As compared with 1990,the ASRs of DALY and YLL both showed the decreasing trend(AAPC values were-0.56%and-0.73%,respectively,P<0.01),and the ASR of YLD showed the upward trend(AAPC=0.65%,P<0.01).In 1990 and 2019,the descending order for ASR of DALY due to low intake of whole grains in Jiangsu Province was the ischaemic heart disease, ischaemic stroke, colorectal cancer and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The ASRs of DALYs of colorectal cancer, ischaemic stroke, and type 2 diabetes mellitus showed the increasing trends(AAPC values were 1.03%,0.43%and 0.28%,respectively);the ASR of DALY of the ischaemic heart disease showed the decreasing trend(AAPC=-1.17%).The disease burden attributable to low intake of whole grains in males was higher than that in females;the disease burden attributable to low intake of whole grains in ≥70 years old group was higher than that in other age groups. Conclusion The disease burden attributable to low intake of whole grains among residents(≥ 15 years old)in Jiangsu Province decreased from 1990 to 2019,but it remained at a high level.Males and elderly are the key populations with low intake of whole grains. It should increase the intake level of whole grains for important population to reduce the disease burden.
