Standardization and Development of Specialized Farmers'Cooperative—Can We Have Both?
This article discusses whether it is possible to achieve both standardization and development of specialized farmers'cooperatives, and how to achieve it,which is of significant importance in examining the current development path of cooperatives in China.Based on monitoring data of 423 national demon-stration cooperatives in Anhui Province, the article examines the impact of standardized governance on co-operative performance and analyzes the power arrangement necessary to achieve cooperative standardiza-tion and development. The study finds that:firstly, standardized governance has a significant positive im-pact on cooperative performance, with a stronger effect on organizational performance compared to member performance.Secondly, the impact of surplus allocation and democratic decision-making norms on cooper-ative performance is heterogeneous, and compared with democratic decision-making norms, surplus allo-cation norms are the main path to improve cooperative performance.Thirdly, adjusting the power arrange-ment of cooperatives and achieving effective matching of residual control and claim rights are essential for achieving both standardization and development of cooperatives, while adjusting decision-making methods and setting preferred shares are feasible approaches to achieve effective alignment of"two rights".This article provides inspiration for reshaping cooperative governance mechanisms and provides reference for exploring the development path of cooperatives in China.
