Agrarian Studies through the Lens of Crops——With an Effort to Expand the History of Crops
Crops are the central theme to both agricultural history and agrarian studies. This paper intro-duces the research tradition and cutting-edge topics related to crops in agrarian studies. At the macro lev-el,agrarian studies explore the origins and development of capitalism through crop flows at the global scale. At the micro level, agrarian studies focus on the relations of production presented by crop produc-tion as a means of understanding agrarian changes of villages, localities, and states. In current global de-velopment,crops are increasingly central to state governance, capital accumulation, peasant livelihoods and ecological sustainability. Hence combining the subjectivity of crops with agrarian studies is one of the cutting-edge trends in human ecology and agrarian studies. By reviewing the academic tradition of agrarian studies, this paper aims to expand the scope for the emerging history of crops, and to promote the ex-change and mutual understanding between these two academic fields.
