Financialization of Forests and Its Socio-environmental Impacts——An Examination of Forest Land Transactions
Against the backdrop of the deepening global financial crisis and ecological crisis, investors have begun to explore new physical assets such as forests, land and water. By transforming natural re-sources and their ecological products into commodities and financial products, capital has opened new markets and profit margins. Based on an examination of the circulation of collective forest property rights in Southwest China, this paper shows the role of social mechanisms such as power, institutions and cul-ture in the process of commercializing and financializing forest resources, while examining the social and environmental impacts caused by the circulation of forest property rights and the changing rules of access, use and management of forest and land resource. In the subsequent deepening of forest tenure reform, the re-embedding of forests management in local social systems through the reconstruction of the collective e-conomy is a necessary way to achieve sustainable development.
