Cultivation of Faba Beans in China:a Brief Introduction
Faba beans, among the earliest domesticated crops, hold a prominent position in China, boasting the world's largest cultivation area and highest yield.Understanding the introduction and spread of this crop is the key of modern faba bean production cultivation in China. This research used historical literature, archaeological findings, and biological data to assign the history of faba bean cultivation in China into following stages:potential early introduction(Xia to mid-Tang),regional introduction and cultivation(mid-Tang to Southern Song),nationwide dissemination and cultivation(late Yuan to early Ming/Qing),and the establishment of specialty production areas(early Qing to present). The cultivation of faba in China possibly started from the southwest, such as Gansu,Qinghai and Yunnan, then expanded to provinces in eastern China including Shanghai,Hubei,Zhejiang,Jiangsu,Anhui and Jiangxi.Meanwhile, faba beans transitioned from a regional to a nationwide staple.Several dominant production areas were formed in Yunnan,Qinghai,Gansu,Zhejiang,Hebei, and beyond. This research outcome not only aids in understanding the domestication and dissemination of faba beans within a global context, but also provides information for enhancing faba bean production and promoting ecological agriculture and sustainable development.
