RESEARCH ON THE IMPACT OF LEISURE AGRICULTURE AND RURAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT ON THE CONSUMPTION OF URBAN AND RURAL RESIDENTS
This study aims to investigate the impact of leisure agriculture and rural tourism development on the consumption of urban and rural residents, explore the regional heterogeneity of its consumption promotion effect, and examine the mechanism of its consumption promotion effect,so as to provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing the consumption promotion effect of leisure agriculture and rural tourism development. Based on the panel data from 775 counties in China from 2007 to 2019,the multi-period Propensity Score Matching Difference-in-Differences (PSM-DID) model was employed to verify whether there was a consumption promotion effect in the development process of leisure agriculture and rural tourism, and the heterogeneity of the consumption promotion effect was explored. The empirical analysis revealed three key findings:(1) The consumption promotion effect exhibited a time lag, initially insignificant in the early stages but becoming more pronounced over time. (2) The consumption promotion effect demonstrated significant regional heterogeneity, primarily manifesting in developed regions, while its impact was less noticeable in underdeveloped areas. (3) One critical intermediary mechanism for the consumption promotion effect of leisure agriculture and rural tourism development was the narrowing of the income gap between urban and rural residents. Therefore,to promote the consumption promotion effect of leisure agriculture and rural tourism development, local governments should provide long-term support for the development of leisure agriculture and rural tourism to ensure the stability and sustainability of relevant policies. When supporting related industries of leisure agriculture and rural tourism, governments should consider the local economic development status, leverage unique leisure resources, and implement tailored policies based on local conditions. The evaluation index system of industrial development effectiveness should incorporate relevant indicators reflecting the income gap between urban and rural residents.
