AI era:Digital and intellectual transformation of cities and enterprise innovation
Artificial intelligence(AI)has accelerated the process of digital and intellectual transformation of cities.As an important strategy for the development of the digital economy,the digital and intellectual transformation of cities has become a key deployment to drive China's economic transformation,industrial upgrading and high-quality development of enterprises.Based on these facts,this paper uses the"National New Generation Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Development Pilot Zone"to design a quasi-natural experiment,and uses the staggered difference-in-differences model(DID)to examine the impact of the digital and intellectual transformation of cities on enterprise innovation from both theoretical logic and empirical evidence.The study finds that the establishment of the pilot zone significantly promotes the innovation input and output of enterprises.Specifically,compared with non-pilot cities,enterprises in pilot cities have significantly increased their R&D investment,patent quantity,patent citation,patent originality and generality.Mechanism tests find that the digital and intellectual transformation of cities mainly empowers enterprise innovation through two paths:"knowledge spillover"and"innovation environment optimization".On the one hand,the digital and intellectual transformation of cities improves the information availability of enterprises,breaks the geographical constraints of innovation cooperation,etc.,and enhances the innovation"ability"of enterprises.On the other hand,the digital and intellectual transformation of cities provides enterprises with a more convenient,efficient and secure innovation environment,which enhances the innovation"willingness"of enterprises.These two forces jointly promote the improvement of enterprise innovation level.Further research shows that the impact of digital and intellectual transformation on enterprise innovation is affected by heterogeneous factors from enterprise level,industry level and market level.The digital and intellectual transformation of cities is more effective for small and medium-sized private enterprises,highly competitive industries and regions with lower marketization level.The conclusion of this paper has important reference value for exploring the digital and intellectual transformation of cities and promoting enterprise innovation in the AI era.
