The Impact of Workplace Exercise on Contextual Performance:Mediating Effect of Empathy and Moderating Effect of Workplace Health Promotion
Workplace exercise aims to improve employees'health levels, and such"active rest"behaviors will not only have health effects, but also promote social effectiveness in the workplace and improve employee contextual performance.Based on Conservation of Resources Theory, this study explored the effects of workplace exercise on employee contextual performance and the mediating role of empathy from the perspective of physiology and psychology, and analyzed the moderating role of workplace health promotion from the perspective of external context. The results of the empirical testing of the valid matching questionnaire data obtained from the survey of 343 office employees and 32 direct supervisors in 16 companies. The results indicate that:workplace exercise can positively influence employee contextual performance;empathy plays a mediating role between workplace exercise and employee contextual performance;workplace health promotion not only moderates the direct relationship between workplace exercise and contextual performance, but also regulates the relationship between workplace exercise and empathy and the mesomeric effect of empathy. Therefore, managers should consider how to build, design, optimize, and innovate a health management system and framework, and employees should actively participate in workplace exercise, improve contextual performance by enhancing physical, emotional, and cognitive resources, and ultimately improve work performance.
