Why do Leaders Sacrifice Themselves:Theoretical Framework Based on The Perspective of Moral Beliefs
Previous research on leader self-sacrifice has focused primarily on the consequences of this leader behavior, lacking a systematic exploration of the formation mechanisms of this leader behavior. In view of this, the paper introduces the perspective of moral beliefs to develop a theoretical framework of the formation mechanism of leader self-sacrifice,to analyse two types of self-sacrificial motivation, and to explore the formation mechanism of leader self-sacrifice based on individual(personality trait,self-construal)and environmental(organizational culture)factors. The results show that leader self-sacrifice may be driven by various motives that may be duty-based and right-based;communal and interdependent leaders may engage in self-sacrificial behaviors through duty-based moral beliefs and motivation, while agentic and independent leaders may engage in self-sacrificial behaviors through right-based moral beliefs and motivation;leaders may be encouraged to engage in self-sacrificial behaviors through duty-based moral beliefs and motivation in organizational embeddedness and hierarchy cultures and to engage in self-sacrificial behaviors through right-based moral beliefs and motivation in organizational autonomy and egalitarianism cultures. The paper helps to promote the study of the formation mechanism of leader self-sacrifice,and provides theoretical guidance for organizations to promote leaders to engage in self-sacrificial behaviors.
