Study on the Antecedent Configuration of Employment Quality for Platform Gig Workers:Based on the Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis(fsQCA)Method
Previous studies on employment quality have mainly focused on college students and migrant workers, with relatively little research conducted on platform gig workers. This study uses the survey data of 237 platform gig workers in three stages as samples, based on the Platform Ecosystem Theory and Job Characteristics Model, constructs a model of the antecedents of employment quality for platform gig workers from four dimensions and seven factors, including platform gig workers, platform enterprises, customers, and the flexibility of gig work.It also employs the fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis(fsQCA)method to explore the configuration paths of the antecedents of employment quality for platform gig workers. The research findings show:First, job flexibility is a necessary condition affecting the high employment quality of platform gig workers;Second, there are four paths that promote high employment quality for platform gig workers, namely the gig-worker-platform interaction type,gig-worker-customer interaction type,platform-customer interaction type, and the three-way interaction type between gig worker, platform, and customer;Third, there are three paths that lead to low employment quality for platform gig workers, namely the lack of capital interest type, the constrained work environment type, and the over-regulation by the platform type. This paper overcomes the limitations of previous literature that only considered the impact of single variables, systematically proposes multiple antecedent configuration paths for high(or low)employment quality of platform gig workers, thus providing new ideas for improving the employment quality of platform gig workers.
