Study on alleviating depressive symptoms of CUMS mice uith Lactobacillus brevis YSJ2
With the development of the"gut-brain axis"theory,"psycho-probiotics"have become a hot research topic for the prevention and treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases.γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA)is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which is effective in alleviating depressive behaviors. In this study,we selected a strain of Lactobacillus brevis YSJ2 with high GABA production, evaluated its fermentation character-istics and gastrointestinal tolerance, and investigated its effects on depression in mice with chronic unpredictable mild stress(CUMS)model. The re-sults showed that Lactobacillus brevis YSJ2 had good fermentation properties and gastrointestinal tolerance, and could increase the total distance trav-elled by chronically stressed mice in the open-field experiment, increase the percentage of time spent in open-arm movement in the elevated cross-maze experiment, and decrease the immobility time in the forced-swimming experiment and the hanging-tail experiment. The mechanism was related to the reduction of serum corticosterone content and up-regulation of salt corticosteroid receptor expression in the hippocampus, which in turn increased the excitability of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in mice.In addition,YSJ2 can also reduce neuronal damage in brain tissue of depressed mice, which provides a theoretical basis for further development of psycho-probiotics to improve depression.
