Iron is essential cation of living organisms . The competition for iron between pathogen and host is considered to be the core of the infectious diseases development . The available iron in the body fluids of host organisms is extremely low . To cope with this scarcity , most bacterial pathogens have evolved many different iron uptake systems . Bioinformatics analysis shows that there are four metal absorption operons in Streptococcus suis . The metal ion binding proteins of metal absorption o-perons and regulators for the metal uptake are virulence factors and preventive vaccine candidates in Streptococcus suis .
