It is not only feasible but also necessary to view the"promoting non-being"thought of He Yan and Wang Bi as a unified ideological system.He Yan not only recognized Wang Bi ideologically,but also protected him politically.The close relationship between He Yan and Wang Bi,their mutual understanding in academic thought,and their common position and influence in the history of thought are the objective premise for the study of their thought as a system.The thought of"promoting non-being"includes the ontology of"non-being",the relationship between"being"and"non-being",and the utility of"non-being."The thought system of"promoting non-being"was closely related to the political environment at that time.He Yan and Wang Bi tried to attract the ruling authorities to favor Daoist teachings and distance themselves from the Sima clan,which upheld Confucianism.Although they did not achieve their political goals,the philosophical speculative significance of their thought aroused widespread interest among the upper class of the society in the ontology of the world and human life,thereby initiating the pioneering development of Wei-Jin metaphysical studies.
