Tang Junyi's Response to Dai Zhen's Philological Interpretation of "Reasoning"
In response to the trends of the times,Song Confucianism developed a system of Neo-Confucianism to interpret the pre-Qin Confucianism, which can be described as refreshing and significant. The"Contemporary New Confucian"Mr.Tang Junyi once described the Song Dynasty as an era of moral idealism. However,by the Qing Dynasty, intellectuals had a different sense of the times, believing that Song Confucianism did not truly inherit the previous learning, and that it should adopt a method of interpreting ancient texts to restore the true meaning of the pre-Qin era.Dai Zhen,a prominent figure of the Qian-Jia school of Confucianism, asserted in his work Annotations and Verifications of the Meanings of Mencius that his Qian-Jia school was the orthodox line of Confucius and Mencius. At the beginning of his work,he discussed the meaning of"reasoning",viewing the pre-Qin"reasoning"as only referring to literary reasoning, physical reasoning and organizational reasoning, while also opposing the all-encompassing nature of heavenly principle as expressed by Song Confucianism scholars like Zhu Xi.In response,Mr.Tang Junyi, who held moral ideals, commented that Dai Zhen's approach, while pragmatic, might overlook the true spirit of pre-Qin Confucianism. This article will use Tang's essay"Original Principle"as a basis for exploration, first describing the historical controversies within it and then reflecting on Tang's arguments.Involving the Han-Song controversy, the discussion will first analyze the method of interpreting ancient texts and then delve into the discussion of meanings and principles. The author believes that Tang's arguments are incisive and insightful, deserving to be called"New Song Confucianism."
