After Nestorianism became the dominant force of Christianity in the Sassanid Persian Empire,it emphasized the development of medical theory and practice.During the subsequent Arab Empire,especially during the Abbasid Dynasty,Nestorian physicians systematically translated ancient Greek and Roman medical works,and has made many original contributions in surgery,ophthalmology,and pharmacology,which played an important role in the establishment and development of the Arab medical system.During the Tang and Yuan Dynasties,with the eastward expansion of Nestorianism,Nestorian medicine was also introduced into China,forming Nestorian medical groups represented by Yazdbōuzēd,Isa and Mar-Sargis.The related Arabic prescriptions and the social relief system integrating medical treating and charity were also popular and originated in ancient China.On the basis of sorting out the rise and eastward transmission of Nestorian medicine,this paper also discusses the theological differences reflected in the medical thoughts of Eastern and Western churches,the transitional role of Nestorianism between Eastern and Western ideologies and cultures,and the future direction of Nestorianism research.
