Since the early 21st century, practice research,as a new research concept, has attracted extensive attention from the social work community at home and abroad.Dating back to the establishment of social work profession in the west, this article describes the meaning construction, practical values, and distinct characteristics of practice research which emphasizes the mutual embedment between practice and research. It thus provides those who have a keen interest in practice research but often feel confused due to its inclusiveness with a possible path to understanding practice research.Compared to other social science research and non-practice research, social work practice research has at least four characteristics:collaboration among multiple actors, reflection on social work, immediate change in practice, and production of ethno-knowledge.Social work practice research attempts to break the duality between scientific rationality and lived experience through the parallel development of research and practice, which further responds to various human needs in an effective manner.
