Spiritual production is an important concept in Marxist theory, and its relationship to the concepts of"spiritual labour"and"productive labour",which appear in Marx's classic texts, remains to be clarified.Marx and Engels defined human activity in terms of"spirituality".In the historical development of human society, this activity is embodied in spiritual production as opposed to material production.Spiritual labour refers to specific spiritual production activities at a particular stage of history after the emergence of the division of labour.Spiritual production cannot be subordinated to the category of productive labour in the critique of political economy.Spiritual production reflects the general thinking of Marx and Engels about the historical development of human society,in which"production"refers to human activity;productive labour reflects their specific critique of their time,in which"production"refers to relations of production. The examination of spiritual production and related concepts can open up a critical study of capitalist spiritual production and identify its object of study today.
