As a material carrier of writing,bamboo slips possess a materiality that cannot be overlooked.This materiality is not only closely related to the text recorded on the bamboo slips but can also independently convey information that the text does not contain.Therefore,the value of bamboo slips extends beyond their textual content;their material information deserves significant attention.Focusing on the materiality of bamboo slips allows for a comprehensive exploration and extraction of the information they convey from a physical perspective.From a metaphysical standpoint,it enables a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of bamboo slips within the contexts of cultural history and social history.Based on this premise,this article examines and reflects on five aspects:the production and crafting of bamboo slips,their appearance and form,their use and reading practices,their abandonment and burial,and the transition from bamboo slips to paper.This paper advocates for treating bamboo slips as archaeological relics deserving study through various perspectives,methods,and problem consciousness drawn from history,archaeology,philology,sketching techniques,and related fields.
