Production performance and feed evaluation on Crotalaria pallida colleted from different sites
Crotalaria pallida belonging to an annual herb of papilionoideae contains more than 30%crude protein, which has great potential to be an animal protein feed. The aim of the study was to select high-quality crotalaria pallida collected from 15 different sites for further utilization through evaluating the production performance, silage effects and rumen digestibility of Hainan black goats. In the experiment, three fields were selected and each one was divided into 15 plots on average(3 m×5 m).T1~T15 were grown in these plots respectively and harvested at 20%-bloom stage to evaluate their production performance.Meanwhile, some samples were selected to prepare silage.200 g of semi-dry samples was put into a 30 cm× 20 cm polyethylene silage bag and fermented for 60 days to evaluate the fermentation quality.4 Hainan black goats raised separately in a metabolic cage with an average body weight of 16.2 kg were used for the experiment. Two hours after feeding the goats in the morning, their rumen fluid and buffer solution were extracted and mixed with 1∶2 to culture Crotalaria pallida before and after silage. Then the dry matter digestibility and rumen fermentation of Crotalaria pallida were evaluated. The results showed that the effect of Crotalaria pallida silage was not obvious, therefore, the Crotalaria pallida silage technology should be further explored by combining with mixed silage or adding crude starter culture.T1(Yuxi,Yunnan Province),T4(Haikou,Hainan Province)and T13(Dongfang,Hainan Province)had higher crude protein content and higher dry matter digestibility, which had the potential to be used as high yield forage. In summary,T13(Dongfang,Hainan Province)had the advantage and value to be as new protein feed.
