Effect of temperature and humidity on serum indices of angus cattle in Ningxia
The experiment was conducted to study the effects of typical temperature and humidity in four seasons on serum biochemical, immune, antioxidant and endocrine hormone indexes of Angus cattle in Ningxia.Sixteen Angus fattening cattle with similar body weight were selected and fed in the same enclosure.THI was calculated by monitoring the temperature and humidity of the farm throughout the year.According to the THI value, the control period, cold stress period and heat stress period were set up,and blood samples were collected to determine the corresponding indicators. The annual THI monitoring showed that summer at June,July and August belonged to mild heat stress, winter at January and February belonged to mild cold stress, and the rest months were in the comfort zone.In terms of serum biochemical, immune and antioxidant indexes, total protein(TP),albumin(ALB),urea nitrogen(BUN),glucose(GLU),immunoglobulin A(IgA),immunoglobulin G(IgG),immunoglobulin M(IgM),interleukin-2(IL-2),interleukin-4(IL-4),total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC),superoxide dismutase(SOD)and glutathione peroxidase(GSH-PX)contents in cold stress period were significantly higher than those in heat stress period(P<0.01).Malondialdehyde(MDA)content was significantly lower than that in heat stress period(P<0.01).In terms of serum endocrine hormone, adrendcorticotropic hormone(ACTH)content in cold stress period<control period<heat stress period(P<0.01),growth hormone(GH)content in cold stress period was significantly higher than that in control period and heat stress period(P<0.01),thyroxine(T4)content in control period was significantly higher than that in heat stress period(P<0.05).In conclusion that chronic cold and heat stress could affect the biochemical, immune, antioxidant capacity and hormone secretion level in different degrees and resulting in growth and development damage of cattle.
