The effects of alfalfa meal on growth performance, intestinal antioxidant indicators, and intestinal morphology of piglets
To explore the effects of alfalfa powder on the growth performance, intestinal antioxidant indicators, and intestinal morphology of piglets.320 piglets with similar age(28±2)and good health were divided into 4 groups, with 8 replicates in each group, and 10 piglets were fed with 0%,3%,6%,and 9%alfalfa meal instead of bran for each experimental group. The experiment lasted for 76 days in total, including 6 days of adaptation period and 70 days of formal experiment. The results show that the addition of 6%and 9%alfalfa meal to the diet significantly increased the final body weight of piglets by 3.2%and 3.5%(P<0.05);The average daily weight gain of piglets in the group with 6%and 9%alfalfa meal added to the diet significantly increased by 3.6%and 4.3%(P<0.05);The feed to weight ratio of piglets significantly decreased by 6.1%(P<0.05)in the group with 9%alfalfa meal added to the diet;In addition, alfalfa meal had no significant effect on the feed intake of piglets(P>0.05).The GSH-Px enzyme activity in the duodenum of piglets in the 6%and 9%alfalfa meal groups was significantly higher than that in other groups(P<0.05).Adding alfalfa meal to the diet significantly improved the T-AOC ability of piglets in the jejunum(P<0.05)and significantly reduced the MDA content in the jejunum(P<0.05);The supplementation of 6%and 9%alfalfa meal groups significantly increased the activity of GSH-Px and SOD in the ileum of piglets, and increased the T-AOC ability(P<0.05).In addition, the addition of alfalfa meal to the diet had no significant effect on the activity of SOD,CAT and T-AOC in the duodenum of piglets,GSH-Px,SOD and CAT in the jejunum, and CAT activity in the ileum(P>0.05).The duodenal V/C values of piglets in the 6%and 9%alfalfa meal groups were significantly higher than those in other groups(P<0.05);The villus height and V/C value of the piglets in the 6%and 9%alfalfa meal groups were significantly higher than those in the other groups(P<0.05);The ileal villus height and V/C value of piglets in the group with 6%alfalfa meal added to the diet were significantly higher than those in the other groups(P<0.05);In addition, adding alfalfa meal to the diet had no significant effect on the height and depth of duodenal villi, jejunal crypt, and ileal crypt in piglets(P>0.05).In summary, adding alfalfa powder can effectively enhance the intestinal antioxidant properties of piglets, improve their intestinal structure and promote growth.Under the conditions of this experiment, the optimal substitution amount for alfalfa powder is 6%.
