The effect of replacing soybean meal with cotton meal on the growth performance, apparent digestibility, and slaughter performance of Hu sheep
This experiment aims to investigate the effects of replacing soybean meal with cotton meal on the growth performance, apparent digestibility, and slaughter performance of Hu sheep.100 fattening Hu sheep with an initial weight of(38.94±2.07)kg were selected and randomly divided into 5 groups, each with 4 replicates and 5 sheep per replicate. The control group was allocated a basic diet based on the nutritional needs of Hu sheep, while the other four groups were replaced with soybean meal in the basic diet with 25%,50%,75%,and 100%cotton meal, respectively. The same feeding and management measures were adopted for each group of Hu sheep, and the experiment lasted for 60 days.Result:(1)Compared with the control group, when the substitution level of cotton meal was between 50%and 100%,the final weight and average daily weight gain of Hu sheep significantly decreased(P<0.05),and the feed to weight ratio significantly increased(P<0.05).(2)Compared with the control group, when the substitution level of cotton meal was between 70%and 100%,the apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber in Hu sheep was significantly reduced(P<0.05).(3)Compared with the control group, when the substitution level of cotton meal was 50%~75%,the live weight and carcass weight of Hu sheep before slaughter were significantly reduced(P<0.05).When the substitution level of cotton meal was 100%,the pre slaughter live weight, carcass weight, and net meat weight of Hu sheep were significantly reduced(P<0.05).Conclusion:With the improvement of cotton meal substitution level, the growth performance, apparent digestibility, and slaughter performance of Hu sheep gradually decrease. When the substitution level of cotton meal is 25%,there is no negative impact on the growth performance and slaughter performance of Hu sheep; When the substitution level of cotton meal exceeds 50%,the the growth performance, apparent digestibility and slaughter performance of Hu sheep is negatively affected.
