Effects of whole silage corn feed supplemented with different roughage on growth performance, slaughter performance and meat quality of angus cattle
The aim of the present study was to inrestigate the effect of whole silage corn feed supplemented with different roughage on growth performance, slaughter performance and meat quality of Angus cattle.45 police cattle with similar age(18.4±0.8)and body weight[(501.26±19.84)kg]were divided into 3 groups, with 1 group for every 15 replicates and 1 replicate for each head. The experimental diets were composed of silage corn plus peanut seedling, oat grass and alfalfa grass. The experiment lasted for 70 days, including 10 days of pre-test and 60 days of trial. Results:under the condition of the same initial weight(P>0.05),the final weight of Angus cattle in alfalfa group was significantly increased by 2.1% and 1.9% compared with peanut seedling and oat grass groups(P<0.05).The total weight gain and average daily gain were significantly increased by 15.56% and 13.14% (P<0.05),respectively.Feed intake was significantly increased by 6.76% and 6.29% (P<0.05),respectively.The ratio of feed to gain was significantly decreased by 7.61% and 6.06%,respectively(P<0.05).Compared with peanut seedling group, the perirenal and omental fat weight of Angus cattle in alfalfa group was significantly increased(P<0.05);Backfat thickness of alfalfa group was significantly increased(P<0.05).The percentage of renal lipid and greater retinal lipid in alfalfa group was significantly increased(P<0.05);In addition, different roughage had no significant effects on carcass weight, pericardial fat weight, net meat weight, slaughter percentage, net meat percentage and heart fat percentage(P>0.05).Compared with peanut seedling group,a* value of longissimus dorsi muscle of Angus cattle in alfalfa and oat grass groups was significantly increased(P<0.05);b* value in alfalfa group was significantly decreased(P<0.05);The shear force of longissimus dorsi muscle of Angus cattle in alfalfa and oat grass groups was significantly decreased(P<0.05).The fat content of longissimus dorsi muscle in alfalfa group was significantly increased(P<0.05);In addition, different roughage had no significant effects on L* value, cooked meat percentage, protein, moisture and ash content of longissimus dorsi muscle of Angus cattle(P>0.05).Conclusion:The results show that the combination of alfalfa and silage corn has the best effect on growth promotion and meat quality improvement of Angus cattle.
