The effects of cottonseed meal replacing soybean meal on the growth performance, serum biochemical indicators, and economic benefits of Simmental cattle
This experiment aims to investigate the effects of cottonseed meal replacing soybean meal on the growth performance, serum biochemical indicators, and economic benefits of Simmental cattle.72 Simmental cattle of approximately 10 months old with similar initial weight[(295.28±16.09)kg]were selected and randomly divided into 4 groups, with 3 replicates in each group and 6 cows in each replicate. The control group was fed a basic diet according to the Beef Cattle Feeding Standard NY/T 815-2004,while the other three groups were fed experimental diets containing 4%,8%,and 12% cottonseed meal at equal nitrogen levels.During the experiment, each group of Simmental cattle was free to feed and drink water. The experiment lasted for 90 days.Result:1)Compared with the control group, there was no significant difference in various growth performance indicators between the 4% cottonseed meal group and the 8% cottonseed meal group of Simmental cattle(P>0.05);Compared with the control group, the average daily weight gain of Simmental cattle in the 12% cottonseed meal group was significantly reduced by 10.78% (P<0.05),and the feed to weight ratio was significantly increased by 10.99% (P<0.05).2)Compared with the control group, the serum total protein and albumin content of Simmental cattle in the 12% cottonseed meal group were significantly reduced(P<0.05),while the urea nitrogen content was significantly increased(P<0.05).3)Compared with the control group, the weight gain, weight gain benefits, and economic benefits of Simmental cattle in the 12% cottonseed meal group were significantly reduced(P<0.05).Among them, the economic benefits of the 4% cottonseed meal group are the highest. Conclusion:Replacing soybean meal with 12% cottonseed meal reduced the growth performance and economic benefits of Simmental cattle. From an economic perspective, the appropriate substitution level of cottonseed meal for soybean meal in the diet of Simmental cattle is 4% .
