Study on polymerization modification of ground calcium carbonate and its application in poly(vinyl chloride)
Ground calcium carbonate was modified through water grinding and polymerization modification to fit the appli-cation in poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC)pipes, and its structure and performance were investigated by using particle size ana-lyzer,thermogravimetric analyzer, infrared spectrometer, pendulum impact testing machine, universal tensile testing ma-chine,colorimeter,and gloss meter. The results indicated that the surface coating modification of calcium carbonate with polyvinyl acetate could be performed through in situ polymerization in calcium carbonate slurry.Compared to convention-al stearic acid-modified calcium carbonate, polyvinyl acetate-modified calcium carbonate exhibited better appearance and mechanical properties in the PVC application. This is due to the fact that polyvinyl acetate can better enhance the compat-ibility between calcium carbonate and polyvinyl chloride.
