Effect of Different Feeding Methods Within 6 Months on The Physical Growth and Development of Infants
[Objective]To investigate the effects of breast-feeding methods for 6 months on the physical growth and development,857 infants born in Beijing Luhe Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University were following up.[Method]The subjects were longitudinally followed up for 12 months. The feeding patterns of infants were collected during 0-6 months, and the physical growth and development were followed up within 12 months of age.Age-specific weight evaluation,age-specific height evaluation,age-specific weight and age-specific height evaluation were calculated by WHO Anthro software. Then descriptive analysis of the data and influencing factors of infant physical growth and development were performed by variance analysis, nonparametric rank sum test,chi-square test and linear regression.[Result]The proportion of infants who were exclusively breastfed for six months and evaluated as having normal weight and length at 6 and 9 months,as well as at 12 months, was higher than that of infants in the partially breastfed and formula-fed groups. The differences between these groups were statistically significant(P≤0.05).Linear regression model was used to correct confounding factors such as gestational age, maternal age, infant sex, mode of delivery, birth weight and birth length etc.It was found that different feeding methods from 0 to 6 months were important factors affecting the growth and development of infants at age 12 months.[Conclusion]Exclusive breastfeeding in 6 months not only has an important effect on the growth and development of infants at 6 months of age,but also affects the growth and development of infants at 9 months of age and 12 months of age. Therefore, clinicians should encourage mothers to continue breastfeeding exclusively for as long as possible during the first 6 months of life to ensure the growth and development of infants.
