Cereal Consumption and Hypertension Among Urban and Rural Adults in China
[Objective]To explore regional disparities in the association between cereal consumption and hypertension incidence among Chinese adults.[Method]Based on the longitudinal China Health and Nutrition Survey,a total of 6 701 participants aged 18 years and over were selected for final analysis.Dietary intake was assessed by 24 hour-recall over three consecutive days.Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to explore the association between cereal consumption and hypertension.[Result]The mean follow-up time was 6.54 person-years.Hypertension incidence was higher in rural residents(38.57%)than urban residents(27.09%).In urban, multivariate cox regression analysis showed that rice consumption was inversely associated with hypertension risk.In rural, the intake of wheat and wheat products was positively associated with hypertension risk(P-trend=0.001 7).Compared with the lowest quartile, the HR(95%CI)of incident hypertension risk for quartiles 2-4 was 0.97(0.81-1.17),1.07(0.89-1.28),and 1.29(1.08-1.54)in the final multivariable model.[Conclusion]Hypertension incidence is high among rural residents than urban residence. The intake of rice and rice products is inversely associated with incidence risk of hypertension in urban. The intake of wheat and wheat products is positively as-sociated with incidence risk of hypertension in rural.
