Assessment of the Vertical Transmission Ability of BVDV Type 1KE-9 Gene Deleted Live Vaccine and BVDV Type 2 NY-93 Gene Deleted Live Vaccine in Pregnant Heifers
The study aimed to assess the vertical transmission ability of BVDV type 1 KE-9 gene deleted live vaccine and BVDV type 2 NY-93 gene deleted live vaccine in pregnant heifers.Sixteen 60-90 days of gestation heifers were randomly assigned to two groups with eight heifers in each group.Six heifers in Group 1 were vaccinated intramuscularly with 2.0 mL BVDV type 1 KE-9 gene deleted live vaccine, and another two heifers in Group 1 were served as sentinel animals without any treatment.Six heifers in Group 2 were vaccinated with 2.0 mL BVDV type 2 NY-93 gene deleted live vaccine, and another two heifers in Group 2 were served as sentinel animals without any treatment.Vaccination induced seroconversion was found on Day 56 for all vaccinated heifers. The foetuses were collected from all vaccinated cows at 56 days after vaccination by caesarean section. The foetuses'brain, thymus, mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen were collected for BVDV virus isolation. The study results showed that no abortion was found in the present study for all vaccinated heifers.Neither BVDV type 1 KE-9 gene deleted live vaccine, nor BVDV type 2 NY-93 gene deleted live vaccine had been isolated in any of the analysed tissues from the foetuses on 56 days after vaccination.Consequently, both BVDV type 1 KE-9 gene deleted live vaccine and BVDV type 2 NY-93 gene deleted live vaccine are safe in pregnant heifers and their foetuses with regard to vertical transmission.
