Antimicrobial effect of chlorhexidine carboxymenthylated chitosan on Enterococcus faecalis: an in vitro study
Objective To evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of chlorhexidine carboxymenthylated chitosan using an in vitro model infected by Enterococcusfaecalis. Methods In the center for disease control of microorganism laboratory the paper diffusion method was used to examine the susceptibility of Enterococcusfaecalis,2% chlorhexidine,110,120,140,160,180 and 200 mg/mL chlorhexidine carboxymenthylated chitosan,5 mg/mL carboxymenthylated chitosan and Apexcal. Results 120 and 140 mg/mL chlorhexidine carboxymenthylated chitosan were more effective than chlorhexidine and 160 mg/mL(P < 0.05).There were no significant differences between 120 and 140 mg/mL chlorhexidine carboxymenthylated chitosan. There were significant differences between 120,140 mg/mL and 110,180,200 mg/mL(P < 0.01).There were significant differences between chlorhexidine carboxymenthylated chitosan and carboxymenthylated chitosan. There were significant differences between carboxymenthylated chitosan and Apexcal(P < 0.01).Conclusion 120 and 140 mg/mL chlorhexidine carboxymenthylated chitosan is fit for root canal retreatment.
